About this Session
It is a truth universally acknowledged that adaptations of Jane Austen’s Regency novels have become a profitable brand, increasing her fan base and sparking a multi-million-dollar industry that shows no sign of abating. Together we will examine the Austen franchise, moving from the first sequel by Sybil Brinton—her 1913 Old Friends and New Fancies—to recent reworkings including the 2024 romantic comedy Jane Austen Wrecked my Life. Come prepared to learn about Austen sequels and prequels, Regency time traveling fantasies, zombie and sea monster adaptations, Bollywood and Hollywood films, and all things Austen “merch.”
